When you create a logo for your business, you should have in mind a few important things.
First of all, you should decide what will be the logo used for, if you need it only for your website, or if you need it for different printing materials like business cards, letterheads, posters, flyers, commercial banners, etc.
The second step is to find a good concept. The concept should be very suggestive. When the people see your logo they should instantly know what kind of business your company is into.
The third step, you should decide about the colors you will use. You shouldn't use too many colors for your logo, especially if you are trying to build a brand, 2-3 colors are more than enough. If you are selling some particular goods, theirs colors may be a good option.
The last step is to find a good designer, if your designing skills are not good enough. When you do this, try not to hire the cheapest designer you find.. Low cost doesn't mean all the time low quality work, but most of the times it does. If you want a professional logo you should pay the best designer you can find. Just think that anyone who sees your logo will think about your company.
The logo shouldn't be missing from any products or comercial materials you have. People use to remember easier an image than a text.
Before creating your logo you should think very well what you need it for. If you need the logo only for a website, than a good quality jpg, gif or png file format it's ok. These are the standard formats for web. But, if you intend to use the logo for printing too, than you definitely need a vectorial logo. Best softwares for creating vectorial logos are Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw. You can also use Photoshop, but all the layers should be unrasterized, so you can enlarge them as much as you need without loosing quality. The best file format for printing is Tiff. Your tiff file should have at least 300 dpi resolution with the color mode set to CMYK. Otherwise, after you print the material, you will have the surprise to see that the colors are different than you wanted.
If you are sure you won't need the logo for print in the future, and you need it only for web usage , there's not necessary to create a vectorial logo, because the costs are higher. Creating vectorial logos is much more complicated. Because of the high resolution working with the document is harder and requires better skills.
In both cases, the designer you choose to design your logo should be very skilled, because the logo will represent the image of your business.
