Things to avoid in SEO.

6 February 2012 - 6/02/2012

“SEO” stands for search engine optimization and defined as the use of various techniques to improve a web site ranking in the search engines and thus attract more visitors. There are many things that should be avoided in SEO some of which are described below:

  • Do not hide text from search engines. Hiding keywords on your web pages is not a good tactic for improving your SEO. This is a black hat seo technique and your website may be banned or penalized by search engines.
  • Do not wait for very long time to implement SEO, it should be the part of discussion from day one.
  • Do not waste your time in submitting your URL to search engines, search engine submission died a few years ago.
  • Do not have a same title element on every page. It is pre requisite to avoiding duplicate content issues and Google’s supplemental index.
  • The vendors for SEO implementation should be selected with care to avoid any fraud.
  • Avoid sharing your content at several domains because this is considered duplicate content and search engines will not index it. There is also a risk to be considered stolen content, which is drastically penalized by search engines.
  • If you have too many variables in URL or have an incorrect robot.txt file then spiders won’t crawl your website. Don’t make the website uncrawlable by adding features like this.
  • Use targeted and relevant keywords to attract the web traffic.
  • Avoid adding a list of keywords in Meta tags, images and alt tags. This will be considered spam.
  • Use different titles on every page. It is a prerequisite to avoid duplicate content.
  • Avoid allowing www.yourdomain.com and domain.com to resolve to the homepage of your website because these are two separate addresses to a search engine and means that you have put the same content in both of them.
  • Make the website user friendly. Proper site structure, logical navigation, descriptive text, links etc are helpful for spiders as well as for the user.
  • Good content is in the first priority don’t compromise on it. A linkable content to your website is a good option too. Glossary or a site map is an easy way to create page full of keywords.
  • Don’t start trading link with every site. Reciprocal links are good but should be made with quality and relevant websites.
  • Avoid pasting your link on bloggers, guest books etc – this is spamming not SEO
  • The target keywords should appear in the page title, description, meta tag and most important inside your content.
  • Don’t check your ranking every time because they are going to change whenever they like, so focus on the content rather than the ranking.
  • Don’t get obsessed with the page ranking. Page ranking is more focused on crawl frequency and depth.
  • Avoid cloaking; it is the process in a website is developed for the purpose of search engine submission and indexing but this website is only accessible to only spiders and not to humans. In this way SEO do malpractice just to have higher ranking and ultimately viewers don’t find the desired content. It is unethical.
  • Avoid door way pages it is considered a poor strategy to have high page ranking. Door way pages are rich in keywords but the users only view them only for moments and are directed towards other website. Black hat SEO’s firms use JAVA scripts that are unreadable by spiders and redirect users to other websites.
