The older a domain is online, the better will be ranked by search engine. This rule applies for all the other pages as well. The older your pages are, the better they will rank. Older pages will always rank better then new added pages.
That's why is good to keep the same urls, even if you change the entire website structure. Sometimes this is a hard thing to do, but keeping the urls of the old site is critical. Not only the ranks of the old pages will be lost, but all the traffic and the links to your pages as well.
If keeping the same urls when changing the website's structure isn't possible, you should redirect the old pages to the corresponding new pages.
