Your keyword phrase should be popular enough but, it should have fewer results than other keyword phrases. Even those keyword phrases have more searches, it doesn't matter. The more important thing is to have fewer results in SERP. If you manage to find such a keyword phrase related to your business than your optimization work become very easy.

So, what I am trying to say is that you will have much more traffic to your website if your website it's in the first page of SERP for a keyword phrase with no so many searches than if your website it's in the 10th page of SERP for a keyword phrase with much more searches. It's hard to believe that anyone will not find what they are looking for in the first pages and they will get there.
