This search engine optimization tip is good for your website for the following reasons:
Having too many links on your website to other websites may be penalized by search engines. Not only that your website may be considered as selling links but also a page with more links than content can't be seen good. The real content from your page will have a low value. Not to mention the page rank of your page which will drastically decrease.
Also, when you have many links to external sites, is very hard to check them all regularly to see if they still work (to avoid broken links on your website) or to see if they are banned by search engines for the use of spam or different black hat seo techniques. In this case your site risk being banned as well just for recommend it.
Search engines want to offer to their surfers websites with good content, and not websites with links to websites with good content.
