Search engines loves websites having links within the context that makes sens. If you can link to other pages from keywords or keyword phrases inside your articles you should do that.
A link within the context is much valuable than a link from a list of links, or a link placed somewhere on the page with no sense inside a context.
For example if inside your article about cars (in general) you have the name of a specific car mentioned and you also have an article talking about that car performances, those two pages should be linked together through that keyword.
Search engines hates keyword stuffing (keywords placed on a page having nothing to do with the rest of the page). The same thing we can say about links. When you exchange links with other websites, you should have the links inside your website and the links to your website from the same niche. If the links can be placed within a context that is much better.
